[Theme] umi, kawa, mori, ame
Kitaro Kasukabe is a Tokyo-based photographer and editor specializing in kinbaku. His photography and video works are characterized by their simple yet fundamental compositions, evoking a universal and contemplative beauty.
This exhibition features 15 carefully selected works, both photographs and videos, from Kasukabe’s longstanding exploration of the theme "Nature and Kinbaku." The title of the exhibition, umi (sea), kawa (river), mori (forest), ame (rain), reflects the natural settings where much of his work is created.
Kasukabe captures the raw emotions, motivations, and intimate humanity of individuals engaged in kinbaku by photographing them one-on-one in challenging natural environments. To him, these harsh landscapes are more than just a backdrop; they serve as metaphors for the psychological landscapes of those involved in kinbaku, symbolizing life's hardships, injustices, and the ideals of dominance and control within the dynamics of SM.
All of the photographs in this exhibition are printed on rare, handmade washi paper and crafted into exquisite traditional hanging scrolls by highly skilled artisans. (These scrolls are available for purchase at the venue. You can view the exhibited works by clicking the button below.)
The video works consist of fragments documenting individuals bound and struggling alone in natural environments, captured with a fixed-point camera. Accompanied by the sounds of rain, waves, and flowing rivers, the faint groans of the bound individuals resonate, creating a poignant and immersive experience.
